Finding New Voices of Democracy

June 9, 2019

In June 2019, the Democracy Discourse Series secretariat released the Call for Applicants for public intellectuals in the Philippines and Malaysia for the fellowship period of 2019 to 2021. The project seeks to foster ideas about what democratic values mean in Southeast Asian societies. It also aims to create a network of advocates engaged in public discourse on issues of the day relevant to the advancement of democratic values in the region.

For its inaugural year,  the program seeks out twelve (12) public intellectuals based in Malaysia and the Philippines, who have produced public interventions that have promoted democratic ideals, values and norms; have a track record of reaching wide, non-specialist audiences; stimulated critical discussion on topics related to democratic life; worked with networks and organizations that have contributed to democratization efforts; and represented new and/or marginalized views that allow their audiences to rethink perspectives on pressing national, regional, and global issues.

Submissions were open until July 2019.
